St. Ignatius High School (SIHS) is taking a proactive step toward empowering young Belizeans with the development of the Street Law Belize 101 Curriculum. This innovative program aims to equip students with a foundational understanding of the legal system, their rights, remedies, and responsibilities, fostering informed citizens and advocates for social and economic justice.

The curriculum development is being spearheaded by Vice Principal and Coordinator of Street Law Belize, Mrs. Pauline Roberts, with invaluable input and information from Principal Ms. Jeaneane Neal and Dr. Christopher Malcolm, Street Law Caribbean Director.

Dr. Malcolm recently visited the school from March 19th to 22nd, 2025, to provide expert guidance and editing support to the curriculum, ensuring its relevance and effectiveness. He also visited class sessions and met with the teachers teaching the course.

“Our vision is to develop youth with basic legal literacy,” explains Mrs. Roberts.

“We want them to understand how democracy and governance work in Belize. This curriculum provides the tools and knowledge necessary for them to become active and engaged members of society.”

The Street Law Belize 101 Curriculum is also designed with a strong focus on competency-based education (CBE), integrating key areas aligned with the National Curriculum Framework. Students will be assessed through both formative and summative methods to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the material.

The curriculum is organized into thematic modules covering key areas of Belizean law. Each module will employ interactive lectures, group discussions, and hands-on activities to engage students and make learning both informative and practical.

“This is not just about memorizing laws, but about understanding how they impact our daily lives,” stated Dr. Malcolm.

“The curriculum is designed to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and a sense of civic responsibility.”

The program will leverage various resources to enhance the learning experience, including:

  • Local Facilitators and Experts: Serving as teachers to provide practical insights into the legal system.
  • Partnerships with Law Firms and Legal Clinics: Offering guest lectures and potential internship opportunities.
  • Reputable Online Platforms: Including the Belize Judiciary website and the Caribbean Court of Justice.

The curriculum’s success hinges on developing key competencies in students:

  • Knowledge: Of Belizean laws, the Constitution, and civic rights.
  • Skills: To navigate legal systems, identify and utilize legal instruments, and advocate for social and economic reforms.
  • Attitude: Cultivating active citizenship, engagement in legal matters, and advocacy for justice.

Looking ahead, the team has built an online Street Law course on Canvas to provide teachers and partner schools with a structured, sequential pathway with ample support and guidance. This online platform has been completed by our expert in technology education, vice principal Mrs. Pauline Roberts, who will further streamline the curriculum and make it accessible to a wider audience.

The Street Law Belize 101 Curriculum at St.Ignatius High School represents a significant investment in the future of Belize, empowering young people to become informed, engaged, and responsible citizens. This program promises to cultivate a generation equipped to navigate the legal system and advocate for a more just and equitable society.
